Did the Miracle of the Sun Presage a Future Chastisement?

Is it possible that the Miracle of the Sun was a warning to mankind, presaging a future event such as a nuclear war or a natural disaster? I believe so.

Our Lady said that the Miracle would be suited to establishing the truth of Her apparitions and Message so that all would have ample reason to believe. It is also clear that the prodigy which She worked – unprecedented in the history of the world and exciting mortal terror in all who witnessed it – was particularly suited to Her dire warning (as yet a Secret at that time) of the annihilation of nations to which the world’s sins were leading.

Thus, the Miracle of the Sun not only demonstrated the true supernatural character of the Fatima revelations, but also gave to all men a clear and strong motive to amend their lives. In addition, it gave ample reason to our Church leaders to promptly and exactly obey Her request for the Consecration of Russia.

Years later – in fact, on the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun in 1973 (the year in which abortion was given legal immunity in the United States) – Our Lady spoke explicitly to Sr. Agnes of Akita, Japan of the dire fate from which She hopes to preserve us. Her words vividly called to mind that terrifying display of the sun falling from the sky:

“If men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge [the biblical Flood], such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful.”

It is entirely a matter of conjecture whether this catastrophe will be related to nuclear war, to natural causes, or even to supernatural causes. My own thought is that both the imagery of the Miracle of the Sun and Our Lady’s precise words suggest a planetary disaster rather than a nuclear holocaust. During the Miracle, as an eyewitness reported, the sun “seemed to free itself from the firmament and blood-red, to plunge towards the earth, threatening to crush us with its fiery mass.” Likewise, Our Lady of Akita spoke of fire “falling” indiscriminately upon its victims, whereas nuclear missiles are systematically impelled against specially targeted cities, and neither are they seen as fiery objects while in flight.

The reader may be aware of a related prophecy by Saint Hildegard which speaks of a planetary catastrophe bringing an end to hellish disorders in the world by wiping out whole nations. The ensuing period of peace which she describes could very well correspond to the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart prophesied by Our Lady of Fatima:

“Toward the end of the world mankind will be purified through sufferings. This will be true especially of the clergy who will be robbed of all property. … Before the comet comes, many nations, the good excepted, will be scourged by want and famine. The great nation in the ocean that is inhabited by people of different tribes and descent will be devastated by earthquake, storm, and tidal wave. It will be divided and, in great part, submerged. …

“By its tremendous pressure the comet will force much out of the ocean and flood many countries, causing much want and many plagues. All coastal cities will live in fear, and many of them will be destroyed by tidal waves, and most living creatures will be killed, and even those who escape will die from horrible diseases. For in none of those cities does a person live according to the laws of God.

“Peace will return to the world when the white flower again takes possession of the throne of France. During this period of peace, people will be forbidden to carry weapons, and iron will be used only for making agricultural implements and tools. Also during this period, the land will be very productive, and many Jews, heathens, and heretics will join the Church.”[1]

A prophecy of the 17th-century mystic Fr. Balthassar Mas seems to refer to the same event:

“I saw a land swallowed up by the sea and covered with water. But, afterwards, I saw that the sea receded little by little and the land could be seen again. The tops of the towers in the city rose again above the water and appeared more beautiful than before, and I was told that this land was England.”[2]

The same terrible event may be what Our Lord foretold of the latter days:

“There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, by reason of the confusion of the roaring of the sea and of the waves; men withering away for fear and expectation of what shall come upon the whole world, for the powers of heaven shall be moved.”[3]

And finally, we recall in this connection the prophecy by St. John describing a burning hail falling from the sky, followed by a burning mountain falling into the sea (a perfectly fitting description of a comet or asteroid striking the earth):

“And the first angel sounded the trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mingled with blood, and it was cast on the earth…. And the second angel sounded the trumpet: and as it were a great mountain, burning with fire, was cast into the sea….”[4]

At our present late hour, it is even possible that the event can be physically foreseen. Astronomers predict a near miss of the earth with the asteroid “Apophis” in April 2029. One might expect, on the contrary, that it or some other comet or asteroid will indeed strike the earth, nearing midnight of June 13th, 2029, GMT.[5] This would be 100 years to the day – even to the “moment” – from Our Lady’s precisely-timed request for the Consecration of Russia.

Let us continue to sacrifice ourselves and pray for this intention, that the Immaculate Heart of Mary will manage to prevent this disaster which would occasion the sudden and unprovided death of countless souls.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Sweet Heart of Mary, be our salvation!
