Our Lady on the Consecration of Russia

How Can Russia Ever Be Consecrated?

We recently received a thoughtful query regarding the Consecration of Russia. It was prompted by articles in the most recent issue (#127) of The Fatima Crusader. Realizing that it is a very complicated issue, the reader asserted that it seems impossible for Russia to ever be consecrated as Our Lady requested.

  • How can the Consecration be done without involving Russian governmental authority?
  • How can it be accomplished as the Russian Orthodox Church doesn’t recognize the Pope’s authority?

Yes, given only human means, it most likely is impossible. Yet, as Our Lord Himself said, “With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

God Delights in the Impossible

Should we not expect for God to act this way? How many times in the Sacred Scriptures did God accomplish the impossible? The Hebrews left with all the wealth of Egypt without a fight, the waters of the Red Sea were parted so that they could pass through, water came from the rock and manna fell from the sky, the walls of Jericho fell at the trumpet blast, fire from above consumed Elias’ holocaust, dry bones came to life at Ezekiel’s prophetic word, the starved lions lay at Daniel’s feet, and the three young men were not consumed by the raging fire. And at the climax of human history, the Virgin conceived and gave birth and God Himself took on human flesh and then, God suffered and died. God has always accomplished the impossible precisely because He is God!

After all, if God requests the ‘humanly possible’ then how will that engender faith or redound to His greater glory? Yet if the impossible is accomplished, then all can acknowledge His majesty and every knee – of those that are in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth – can bow before the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts.

Insurmountable Difficulties?

Now, regarding the specific difficulties mentioned by our reader: Given the fact that the Pope has jurisdiction throughout the entire world, no permission or cooperation will be needed from the Russian government or the Orthodox clergy. On the other hand, it is Our Lady of Fatima’s precise request that the entire body of Catholic bishops participate in the act, for the involvement of the Catholic hierarchy is essential to the Consecration of Russia and seems destined to play a significant role in the ensuing conversion of Russia to the Catholic Faith.

The great power of this Consecration will be evident throughout the world, redounding to the honor not only of the Immaculate Heart of Mary but also to the Pope and bishops whom Our Lord has established as the governors of His one true Church by virtue of their Apostolic succession, demonstrating beyond question the enormous difference which exists between them and their schismatic counterparts.

Learn From a Fatima Expert

Fatima scholar Frère Michel makes an interesting observation on this aspect of the Fatima request, through which God has promised so great a miracle, with insistence on the prominent mediation not only of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, but also of the Catholic hierarchy. He writes that the promised miraculous effects of the Consecration will stupefy the whole world, reawakening faith and causing a hymn of thanksgiving to break out among all peoples. He writes:

“[It is] imperative that the whole world – heretics, schismatics, Jews, and pagans – realize that God performed the miracle through the mediation not only of the Queen of Heaven, but also in response to ‘a solemn and public act’ of the Pastors of His true Church, which is Catholic and Roman.

“What admirable wisdom in this two fold mediation! For together, both are expected by God for the long-awaited miracle, so necessary to world peace, to finally take place.   …   Poor Russia, dominated by Bolshevism and still a victim of its centuries-old schism, will be saved from both evils at the same time. Moreover, deliverance will come at the request and on the decision of all the Catholic bishops obeying their head, this Pope of Rome, whose universal primacy of jurisdiction as successor of Peter, the Russian Church, in its obstinate rebellion, had refused to recognize.

“Yes, let us admire the astonishing divine stratagem through which God wills to bring back to His flock — by the millions — the multitude of His sheep led astray in the schism, and at the same time assure world peace. What fullness of wisdom in this great design of mercy! …  The more we examine it, the more we understand its divine coherence, and the more we understand also that this design is irrevocable, and that God does not will to change any part of it.” (The Whole Truth about Fatima, Vol. II, pp. 494-495.)

Pray Unceasingly

Let us believe, as our Blessed Lady said, that the Holy Father and all the bishops, on one special day, will consecrate Russia to Her. Have confidence, knowing with absolute certitude that it will be done. Beg the Holy Ghost for the grace to have this faith. Then with the simple and perfect trust that baptized children must have in their Heavenly Father, pray every day that the Consecration will be accomplished soon.
