Belief in Evolution Leads Many to Abandon the Faith
What happened “In the Beginning…” to bring about the earth, the universe, and indeed, everything that we know and see?
This question has mystified mankind from time immemorial. Was there even a beginning at all? Has the universe always existed? OR is there any truth to the age-old account of the Six Days of Creation found in the Sacred Book of Genesis?
It may come as a surprise to many people, but did you know that the biblical Six-Day account of creation is more compatible with scientific findings than any other explanation for how the world began?
This is a significant issue and one that Catholics have to know the truth about. And we need to be able to explain it to others!
Surveys among young Catholics who have abandoned the Faith, show the most common reason for their apostasy is their acceptance of evolution as true. The reason is as follows. If the theory of evolution is correct, then the account in Genesis must be wrong. If the first book of Sacred Scripture is wrong, then surely the other books are filled with errors as well. Many then begin to even doubt God’s existence. They accept the devil’s lie that creation is simply the product of a random process born out of chaos.
Yet the downward spiral does not end there. The inevitable conclusion of this line of thought is that there is no life after death. We came from chaos and return to chaos. What compelling reason does one then have to live a good moral life filled with beauty, truth, and goodness? Why strive to live the supernatural virtues of faith, hope, and charity? How easy it then becomes to pursue the most pleasurable life possible, filled with lust, gluttony, sloth, and all the other capital sins.
Ten-Week Course on the Six Days of Creation
Starting Tuesday, June 4, Hugh Owen of the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation will teach a 10-week online course on the Catholic case for 6-day creation. Students will read I Have Spoken to You from Heaven: A Catholic Defense of Creation in Six Days and will have the opportunity to attend a weekly online class with the author, Hugh Owen. Each week, Mr. Owen will give a 30-minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A. Students will also be able to discuss the material with each other via online discussion boards.
This course will:
- Answer the question: What difference does it make whether we believe that God created everything over billions of years or in six days, as almost all the Fathers and Doctors of the Church believed and taught?
- Examine the true literary genre of Genesis – the consensus of the Fathers and Doctors, including St. Thomas Aquinas, on the meaning of the word “day” in Genesis 1.
- Discover that God chose out of love for us to create the world according to the rhythm that we must follow if we want to live a happy, healthy, holy life.
- See that, in light of the principle, lex orandi, lex credendi (the law of praying is the law of believing), all the liturgical traditions of the Catholic Church East and West teach the literal interpretation of “day” in Genesis 1 and of the whole sacred history of Genesis.
- Look at the historical evidence for the truth of six-day creation, as well as evidence in the realm of natural science that supports this interpretation.
- Answer most – if not all – the objections that Catholic scholars have raised against the traditional Catholic interpretation of Genesis 1.
- Examine the profound link between the rejection of six-day creation and the timing of Our Lady of Fatima’s request for the Consecration of Russia in 1929, and why it is so important for all of us to heed Our Lady of Fatima’s request to practice the First Saturday devotions.

Hugh Owen directs the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation, which provides a forum for Catholic theologians, philosophers, and natural scientists throughout the world who defend the traditional Catholic doctrine of creation that was handed down from the Apostles and who are dedicated to making sure that the evidence for and against the evolutionary hypothesis is made available to Church leaders and to the lay faithful.
