What is Almsgiving?

Question:

What is Almsgiving? I understand that almsgiving is one of the three ways we are called to make satisfaction for our sins along with fasting and prayer. But what exactly fits under this category? Is it only almsgiving if we give it to the poor? Or does contributing to the Church also count? Are acts of charity that don’t involve the giving of money considered almsgiving?

Answer:

Almsgiving is one of the three main means of making satisfaction for our sins (the other two being prayer and fasting). Broadly speaking, almsgiving includes any of the corporal works of mercy undertaken for charitable purposes. Strictly speaking, however, it refers to giving money to relieve the poor.
