Introit • Ps. 30, 10, 16, 18
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am afflicted: deliver me, and save me out of the hands of my enemies, and from them that persecute me; let me not be confounded, O Lord, for I have called upon Thee. Ps. 30, 2. In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me never be confounded: deliver me in Thy justice. Have mercy.
Of thy loving-kindness pour Thy grace into our hearts, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that, curbing our sinful propensities with voluntary chastisement, we may suffer in this life and not be condemned to eternal punishments. Through our Lord.
Commemoration of Seven Dolores of the Blessed Virgin.
O God, in Whose passion the sword, according to the prophecy of blessed Simeon, pierced through the soul of Mary, the glorious virgin and mother, mercifully grant that we, who reverently commemorate her piercing through and her suffering, may, by the interceding glorious merits of all the saints faithfully standing by the cross, obtain the happy fruit of Thy passion. Who livest.
Epistle • Jer. 17, 13-18
Lesson from Jeremias the Prophet.
In Those days, Jeremias said: O Lord the hope of Israel: all that forsake thee shall be confounded: they that depart from thee, shall be written in the earth: because they have forsaken the Lord, the vein of living waters. Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed: save me, and I shall be saved, for thou art my praise. Behold they say to me: Where is the word of the Lord? let it come.
And I am not troubled, following thee for my pastor, and I have not desired the day of man, thou knowest. That which went out of my lips, hath been right in thy sight. Be not thou a terror unto me, thou art my hope in the day of affliction. Let them be confounded that persecute me, and let not me be confounded: let them be afraid, and let not me be afraid: bring upon them the day of affliction, and with a double destruction, destroy them, O lord our God.
Gradual • Ps. 34, 20, 22
My enemies spoke peaceably to me, and in anger they were troublesome to me. Thou hast seen, O Lord, be not Thou alien: depart not from me.
Tract. Ps. 102, 10
O Lord, repay us not according to the sins we have committed, nor according to our iniquities. Ps. 78, 8, 9. O Lord, remember not our former iniquities: let Thy mercies speedily prevent us, for we are become exceeding poor. Help us, O Lord our Saviour: and for the glory of Thy name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for Thy name’s sake.
Gospel • John 11, 47-54
Continuation of the Holy Gospel According to St. John.
At that time, the chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles? If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation. But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing. Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation. And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed. From that day therefore they devised to put him to death. Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.
Offertory • Ps. 118, 12, 151, 42
Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justifications: give me not up to my proud calumniators, and so shall I answer them that reproach me.
Grant us, O merciful God, that we may ever have the grace of serving Thine altars worthily, and may be saved by constantly partaking of the sacrifices offered thereon. Through our Lord.
Communion • Ps. 26, 12
O Lord, deliver me not to the desires of them that persecute me; for false witnesses have risen up against me.
May the protection of the sacrifices we have partaken of never leave us, and may it ever ward off from us all things harmful. Through our Lord.
