The Paris Attacks: An Exhausted Reply
from an Exhausted Church

by Christopher A. Ferrara
November 16, 2015

Almost eighty years ago, in his The Great Heresies, Hilaire Belloc predicted “a second period of Islamic power” in Europe to howls of derision from the "enlightened ones" of his day. This would happen, he warned, because “the bad work begun at the Reformation is bearing its final fruit in the dissolution of our ancestral doctrines — the very structure of our society is dissolving.”

With Islam, on the other hand, he observed, “there has been no such dissolution of ancestral doctrine — or, at any rate, nothing corresponding to the universal break-up of religion in Europe.” Thus, he concluded presciently: “The second period of Islamic power may be delayed, but I doubt whether it can be permanently postponed” because “[t]he whole spiritual strength of Islam is still present in the masses of Syria and Anatolia, of the East Asian mountains, of Arabia, Egypt and North Africa.”

The day Belloc predicted has arrived. But even he would be amazed at the extent to which the human element of the Catholic Church exhibits “the dissolution of our ancestral doctrines” already evident eighty years ago in the decrepit Protestant sects.  Today, the Catholic Church assumes the degrading role of a kind of simpering courtier in the kingdom of the New World Order, wherein Islam is welcomed with open arms while the Church is under constant suspicious surveillance by the state, which is ready to pounce at the slightest sign of a return of the Church Militant.

Thus, confronted with the mass murder and mayhem conducted by agents of the Islamic State in the very heart of the very nation known as “the eldest daughter of the Church,” Pope Francis professed perplexity as his initial reaction:  “I am moved and I am saddened. I do not understand, these things [sic] hard to understand.”

But why should it be hard to understand?  Islam is a religion invented by a man of violence, whose influence has expanded exclusively by violence. To this day Islam is maintained by violence even in “moderate” Islamic states, where the penalty for conversion to Christianity is death.

Why should it be hard to understand that this false religion, the perpetual enemy of Christ and His Church, has spawned modern Muslim warriors who vow to conquer Europe and ultimately Rome itself even if they have to blow themselves up to further their cause?

Why should it be hard to understand what Belloc could see coming eighty years ago and which is now happening before the very eyes of Francis and his fellow servitors of the Zeitgeist? The answer is that they are ideologically committed to willful blindness regarding the catastrophic failure of the insane experiment to open the Church to a “modern world” that allows something as primitive as Sharia to be established in European cities while confining the Law of the Gospel to the ghetto of private opinion.

Thus Francis and the progressivist cadre with which he has surrounded himself will continue to delude themselves that a religion born, propagated, and maintained through violence has nothing to do with violence and that “dialogue” with “authentic” Islam can eliminate the threat that actual Islam now poses to what is left of Western civilization.

Led by Francis in his unshakeable commitment to the liberal dogma of “open borders,” which he recklessly proclaims a duty in charity, the Vatican will continue to demand that the nations of Europe admit an endless stream of young male Muslim “refugees” among which are jihadists in disguise or potential recruits. The Vatican will continue to ignore such urgent warnings as that of the Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq, Archbishop Amel Shimoun Nona, driven from his own diocese by ISIS more than a year before the Paris attacks:

Our sufferings today are the prelude of those that you, Europeans and Western Christians, will also suffer in the near future…. You must consider again our reality in the Middle East, because you are welcoming in your countries an ever-growing number of Muslims. Also, you are in danger. You must take strong and courageous decisions, even at the cost of contradicting your [liberal democratic] principles. If you do not understand this soon enough, you will become the victims of the enemy you have welcomed in your home.

And, of course, Francis and his Vatican apparatus, slaves to the para-conciliar ideology and its dictate of “interreligious dialogue,” will never acknowledge the undeniable truth about Islam that Saint John Bosco proclaimed not long before the turn of the 20th century:

Mohamed’s religion consists of a monstrous mixture of Judaism, Paganism and Christianity. Mohamed propagated his religion, not through miracles or persuasive words, but through the force of arms. [It is] a religion that favors every sort of licentiousness and which, in a short time, allowed Mohamed to become the leader of a troop of brigands. Along with them he raided the countries of the East and conquered the people, not by introducing the Truth, not by miracles or prophecy; but for one reason only: to raise his sword over the heads of the conquered shouting: believe or die.

Don Bosco was canonized by Pope Pius XI, the same Pope who, only a few years before Belloc made his prediction, commanded the Church to pray that Christ would be King “of all those who even now sit in the shadow of idolatry or Islam…”

When Belloc wrote that “the bad work begun at the Reformation is bearing its final fruit in the dissolution of our ancestral doctrines,” not even he could have foreseen the day when the Vatican, with the Pope’s full approval, would announce a “shared commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation.”  The Vatican itself now lauds the very event that led to the spiritual exhaustion of the once Christian West and thus the Islamic resurgence now underway, which even the Catholic Church, herself exhausted, seems powerless to resist.

Can there be any greater sign that we are in the midst of what the Third Secret in its entirety must foretell?  Will we live to see the day when a “Bishop dressed in White” flees the devastated city of Rome only to be executed by a band of soldiers — Islamic militants, perhaps — on a hill outside the ruined city?

It is long past time for the prelates who speak incessantly of “reading the signs of the times” to open their eyes and begin reading them. For now, however, willful blindness remains their program, and the blind continue to lead the blind toward an abyss from which there will be no escape but death.
