There is no "grain of history," but only the Lord of History.

In a celebrated interview with La Croix magazine — one of many which have delighted a world in rebellion against the Social Kingship of Christ — Pope Bergoglio declared flatly: “States must be secular. Confessional states end badly. That goes against the grain of History.”

But in truth there is no “grain of history.” The mere passage of time does not preclude the restoration of Catholic social order in Catholic countries. All that is required is an act of political will: the very essence of the democracy now celebrated as the only legitimate form of government. Nor do confessional states “end badly.” Rather, they have been ended badly by murderous insurrectionists who actually rejected the “will of the people” they purported to represent.

A prime historical case in point is the regeneration of Catholic Ecuador by its martyr President Gabriel García Moreno. Defying the imaginary “grain of history,” during his two terms as President (from 1861-1875) he defeated the Masonic tyrants who had dominated the country and gave Ecuador a Catholic constitution that established Catholicism as the religion of the state but also provided for the elements of modern representative democracy. And in 1873 Ecuador was dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

What so infuriated García Moreno’s enemies was that he was able to combine the reconstruction of a Catholic state with astonishing economic and social progress in that small, impoverished nation. During his two terms as President, he revitalized Ecuador’s entire educational system, from the elementary schools to the University of Quito, including the university’s departments of the physical sciences. Ecuador’s educational system was permeated with Catholic teaching. He thoroughly revised and humanized Ecuador’s civil and penal codes, including religious and vocational instruction of criminals. He drastically reduced state debt and government corruption. He established a nationwide network of highways and railroads uniting the cities of Ecuador and sparking an enormous growth in commerce and economic development. He paved the streets, improved the water supply, established a postal system and a telegraphic communications network between Quito and Guayaquil.

In short, García Moreno was, as one commentator put, “a constant thorn in the side of those who would have the world believe that religion and progress are incompatible.” The historian Peter H. Smith, no less than the Simon Bolivar Professor of Latin American Studies at University of California in San Diego and a former dean at MIT, has had the intellectual honesty to admit that the “dictator” Garcia Moreno:

“was neither a conservative nor a counter-revolutionary, but a full-fledged revolutionary. The essence of his revolution lay in the fact that he had imposed a political and social system on Ecuador that fitted the traditions and needs of his country. Under his rule, Ecuador had thrived as united nation from 1861 to 1875.”

But the Masonic enemies of the Social Kingship of Christ would never allow García Moreno’s monumental achievement to stand. In fact, Masonic influence in Ecuador was so obvious that García Moreno was able to predict his own assassination by Masonic agents.

He contemplated his own imminent demise in his last letter to Blessed Pope Pius IX (the very Pope who himself had narrowly escaped death during the insurrections led by the Masonic heroes Mazzini and Garibaldi several years earlier, only to end up a prisoner in the Vatican):

“Today, when all the Masonic lodges, excited by those in Germany and Belgium, utter against me the vilest and most horrible of calumnies, and are moving heaven and earth to find means to assassinate me, I need more than ever the power of Divine protection, so as to live and die for the defense of our holy religion and of this dear Republic which God has called upon me to govern.

“What greater happiness can be awarded to me, most Holy Father, than to see myself detested and calumniated for the love of our Divine Redeemer? But what still greater happiness it would be if your benediction could obtain from heaven the grace to shed my blood for Him, who, being God, has deigned to shed every drop of his at the pillar and upon the Cross.”

A few weeks later, on August 6, 1875, the Feast of the Transfiguration, García Moreno’s assassins employed a messenger to summon him from the Cathedral in Quito, where he was praying before the Blessed Sacrament, on the false pretext that he was urgently needed at the government palace.

When García Moreno stepped into the plaza the assassins, including one Rayo, immediately hacked and shot him to death, with Rayo using a machete to lop off the President’s left arm while screaming: “Die, destroyer of liberty.”

As he lay dying, García Moreno famously replied: “Dios no muere! [God does not die!].”

In memory of García Moreno, Pius IX ordered a solemn Requiem Mass to be celebrated in the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere and had a monument to the martyr-president erected in Rome, bearing an inscription praising his Catholic fidelity. Upon succeeding Pius IX, Pope Leo, the new papal nemesis of the Masons, hailed García Moreno’s Ecuador as “the model of a Christian state.” [Berthe, García Moreno, viii].

By 1895, however, nearly every juridical trace of García Moreno’s Catholic revival had been eliminated by successive liberal regimes. But it was not the “grain of history” that ended Ecuador’s Catholic revival. It was the hand of a murderer.

As for the non-existent “grain of history,” we cannot forget that the Lord of History will infallibly restore His Kingship in the end in connection with the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And it is no coincidence that it was She who appeared at Quito, Ecuador to deliver Heaven’s promise in this regard:

“To test this faith and confidence of the just, there will be occasions in which everything will seem to be lost and paralyzed. This will be, then, the happy beginning of the complete restoration.”
